Heat Stroke Risk

Dogs have very few sweat glands and cool themselves primarily through panting. This mechanism has its limits, making environmental management critical.

Breeds at higher risk - Brachycephalic breeds (French Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Pugs, etc.) - Overweight dogs, senior dogs, and puppies - Dogs with heart or respiratory conditions

Summer Care Tips

• Walk timing: Early morning before 6 AM or after 8 PM when pavement has cooled
• Pavement check: If it feels hot after holding your hand on it for 5 seconds, it is too hot for paw pads
• Room temperature: Keep at 26-28 degrees C with air conditioning. Always run AC when leaving the dog home alone
• Hydration: Provide fresh water in multiple locations. Carry a portable water bottle when going out
• Shade: Ensure crates and resting areas are out of direct sunlight

Heat Stroke Signs and Response

• Signs: Lethargy, heavy panting, excessive drooling, vomiting, collapse
• Response: Move to a cool area and apply wet towels to armpits, neck, and groin
• Seek vet care: Visit the vet immediately if symptoms do not improve

Winter Care

Dogs Sensitive to Cold

Not all dogs handle cold well. These dogs need extra attention:

• Cold-sensitive breeds: Chihuahuas, Toy Poodles, Italian Greyhounds (small, short-haired breeds)
• Cold-tolerant breeds: Shiba Inus, Huskies, Golden Retrievers (double-coated breeds)
• Special care needed: Senior dogs, puppies, sick dogs, underweight dogs

Winter Care Tips

• Room temperature: Maintain 16-22 degrees C; 22-25 degrees C for senior dogs
• Cold weather gear: Some dogs dislike clothing, so test first. Adding a blanket to the bed helps
• Walk precautions: Use dog boots or paw balm to prevent frostbite on paw pads
• Dry air management: Heating dries the air and can cause skin issues. Use a humidifier
• Icy surfaces: Frozen paths are slippery and can cause injuries. Walk carefully

Seasonal Transitions

Spring and fall bring heavy shedding in double-coated breeds. Sudden temperature changes can also cause health issues. Monitor appetite and energy levels daily.
