Bonsai summer care: shade netting, morning and evening watering, summer fertilizing, and bench ventilation tips.
Strong summer sun causes leaf burn in bonsai. Deciduous species like maple and Japanese maple with thin leaves are particularly affected—install 30–50% shade netting over the display bench. Pine and juniper species are relatively sun-tolerant, but 30% shade on extreme heat days provides reassurance.
Install shade netting over the entire bench while maintaining sufficient airspace underneath for ventilation. Excessive shade percentage causes branch elongation, so select appropriate rates by species. Increase shade during the July–August peak, gradually removing it from September onward.
Watering is the most critical aspect of summer bonsai management. Small pots dry quickly, requiring twice daily (morning and evening) as standard. Miniature bonsai and shallow pots are especially drought-prone. When watering, also spray leaves (leaf water) to wash away dust and aid transpiration.
The ideal is watering thoroughly until water flows from drainage holes. Surface-only wetting doesn't reach the interior, leaving root tips dry. On extreme heat days, also check pots midday—if soil appears white and dry, provide an additional watering.
Withhold fertilizer during August's peak heat as general practice. Fertilizing when roots are weakened by heat risks fertilizer burn. Apply diluted liquid fertilizer biweekly in July, suspend in August, and resume when September brings cooler weather.
If using solid fertilizer, consider temporarily removing it during extreme heat. High temperatures can cause rapid nutrient dissolution, creating concentration damage. Autumn is a critical fertilizing period for bonsai, so provide thorough feeding from mid-September to prepare for winter.
Bonsai display benches must prioritize ventilation. Space pots adequately and prevent stagnant air. Raising pots off ground level on shelving avoids reflected heat and reduces pest and disease occurrence. Direct ground placement on concrete is strictly prohibited.
Wooden or mesh steel shelving is standard. Waist height is most manageable, with a minimum 50cm above ground recommended to avoid radiant ground heat. Sprinkling water on the ground beneath the bench provides evaporative cooling.
Summer activates bonsai pests and diseases. Scale insects, aphids, and spider mites are representative pests—remove immediately upon discovery. Scale insects attach to branches and leaves, sucking sap and causing sooty mold.
Fungal diseases like powdery mildew and rust also proliferate in summer. Ventilation is the primary prevention, but apply fungicide promptly if infection occurs. Remove diseased leaves and dispose to prevent spreading.
On Buri-Choku, you can purchase premium specimens from specialist bonsai growers. Species-specific management and summer precautions are available directly from growers.
