Aqua soil is the most widely used substrate for planted aquariums. Made from fired, granulated clay, it is easy for plant roots to penetrate and it naturally softens water to a slightly acidic pH. Nutrient-Rich vs. Adsorptive Soils

Nutrient-rich soils contain high levels of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, etc.) that leach into the water column. Advantages include strong initial plant growth stimulation. Disadvantages include a significant ammonia spike during the cycling period (requiring frequent water changes for 2-4 weeks), higher tendency for algae outbreaks during setup, and faster nutrient depletion over time.
