Agave Outdoor Cultivation Guide: Cold Hardiness & Winter Care

Agaves are native to arid regions, but select species can be grown outdoors year-round in Japan, including as landscape plantings.

Choosing Cold-Hardy Varieties

Highly cold-hardy (-10°C and below) - Agave parryi: Tolerates approximately -15°C - Agave neomexicana: Approximately -12°C - Agave havardiana: Approximately -10°C

Moderately cold-hardy (-5 to -8°C) - Agave montana: Approximately -8°C - Agave ovatifolia: Approximately -7°C

Species like titanota, horrida, and attenuata have low cold tolerance and should be kept in pots.

Planting Procedure

Location: South-facing with full sun and excellent drainage. Sites near south-facing walls or fences benefit from radiant heat.

Soil preparation: Dig a hole at least 50 cm deep and mix in 30–40% pumice. Create a 10 cm drainage layer of pumice at the bottom. Plant with the crown slightly elevated.

Timing: May through June is optimal.

Winter Protection

• Stop watering entirely from November onward
• Mulch around the base with bark chips or straw
• In colder regions, wrap the entire plant in frost cloth
• If frost-damaged, allow natural thawing and remove damaged leaves in spring

Annual Management Calendar

• Spring: New leaf growth begins. Apply small amount of slow-release fertilizer
• Summer: Peak growth period. Natural rainfall is sufficient
• Fall: Growth slows. Reduce watering
• Winter: Complete water cutoff. Implement cold protection measures
