Bred by Tantau (Germany) in 1964, 'Blue Moon' introduced a truly lavender-blue color to the world of roses that was unprecedented at the time. Its large high-centered blooms, 10–12cm across, carry a rich, fruity Damask fragrance widely regarded as one of the finest among all roses — a benchmark for scent in rose breeding. The color, a soft lilac-mauve rather than true blue, fades in strong afternoon sun, so a position with morning sun and some afternoon protection is ideal. Disease resistance is moderate, with some susceptibility to powdery mildew. Winter pruning by one-third encourages strong growth and the best flower quality in spring. A landmark cultivar in the pursuit of the elusive blue rose.
