A gecko with body flaps enabling gliding. Characterized by flat body mimicking tree bark.
Flying geckos of the genus Ptychozoon are arboreal geckos native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. They possess well-developed skin flaps along the sides of the body, limbs, and tail that function as parachutes, allowing the animals to glide between trees. The body coloration closely resembles tree bark — typically mottled brown and grey — providing effective camouflage when the gecko presses flat against a trunk. Adults reach 15–20 cm in total length. Flying geckos are nocturnal insectivores. In captivity they require tall, well-ventilated enclosures with cork bark hides, temperatures of 24–28°C, and high humidity of 70–80%. Handling causes significant stress, so observation-based keeping is recommended.
