Shrimp Goby

The goby-shrimp symbiosis refers to the remarkable mutualistic partnership between gobiid fishes (primarily Amblyeleotris and Stonogobiops species) and pistol shrimps (genus Alpheus) found on sandy substrates and reef margins throughout the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The nearly blind shrimp excavates and maintains an elaborate burrow system, while the goby stands guard at the entrance, alerting its partner to danger by flicking its fins — a signal the shrimp detects through tactile contact. Witnessing both animals retreat simultaneously into their shared burrow is one of the most compelling behaviors observable in a home aquarium. A minimum 60-litre tank with fine sand substrate at least 5 cm deep is required; introducing the goby and shrimp together maximizes bonding success.
