Golden Stag Beetle

The golden stag beetle (genus Allotopus) is a striking species from the highland forests of Southeast Asia, renowned for its brilliant all-over golden metallic sheen. A fascinating trait is that its coloration shifts to appear darker or blackish under high humidity conditions, reverting to vivid gold when dry. Body length reaches 40–80 mm. As a highland species, it is sensitive to heat and must be maintained at a cool 18–24°C. Larval rearing requires reishi (Ganoderma) fungal wood or specialized reishi substrate—standard fungal substrate bottles are generally unsuitable—adding considerable challenge to its husbandry. Enclosure humidity must be kept consistently high; desiccation is harmful. Females deposit eggs in reishi or equivalent fungal wood. Adults live 3–6 months. Its extraordinary beauty has earned it the reputation of "the jewel of stag beetles," making it among the most prized species in the collecting community.
