Izumo Nankin Goldfish

The Izumo Nankin is a rare Japanese goldfish native to the Izumo region of Shimane Prefecture in southwestern Japan, where it has been designated a National Natural Monument. It lacks a dorsal fin and has a rounded, egg-shaped body with a characteristic coloration: a white body with vivid red-orange markings on the belly, head, and around the tail. The symmetrical fan-shaped tail is best appreciated from above, and top-view observation in shallow traditional basins is the time-honored way to enjoy this breed. Historically prized by wealthy families and samurai households in Izumo, the breed is today preserved by dedicated organizations including the Central Nankin Lovers Association. The Izumo Nankin is extremely difficult to source outside Japan and even within Japan remains a specialist breed available primarily through enthusiast clubs and specialist shops.
