The Havanese is the national dog of Cuba and the country's only native breed. It is a member of the bichon family and was developed from small dogs brought to Cuba by Spanish settlers during the colonial period. After the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the breed was brought to the United States by Cuban exiles and eventually spread worldwide. Havanese are small dogs with a long, silky coat that comes in a wide variety of colors. They are known for their cheerful, outgoing, and playful temperament, and make excellent companion dogs. The breed sheds minimally and is considered relatively hypoallergenic.
