The Cirneco dell'Etna is an ancient breed of hunting dog originating from Sicily, Italy, particularly from the area around Mount Etna. It is believed to have descended from dogs brought to Sicily by Phoenician traders over 3,000 years ago, and similar dogs appear on ancient Sicilian coins and pottery. The breed is slender and elegant, with large erect ears, and was traditionally used to hunt rabbits in the rocky volcanic terrain of Sicily. It is one of Europe's oldest and rarest dog breeds, valued for its ability to hunt using sight, scent, and hearing.
