Named for the Mexican state of Chihuahua, the breed is believed to have descended from the Techichi, a small dog kept by the ancient Toltec civilization. Chihuahuas have a distinctive apple-shaped head, large eyes, and erect ears. The breed comes in both smooth and long coat varieties, with a wide range of colors.
