Active medium cat with unique ticked coat. Extremely curious and playful; called the 'Border Collie of cats.'
The Abyssinian is one of the oldest known cat breeds, believed to have originated in Ethiopia (formerly Abyssinia), though genetic studies suggest its ancestral cats may have come from coastal regions of the Indian Ocean. The breed is named for Abyssinia, from where it was reportedly brought to Britain in the 19th century. Abyssinians are slender, medium-sized cats with a distinctive ticked tabby coat in which each hair has multiple bands of color. They are highly active, intelligent, and curious cats, often described as the "Border Collie of cats" for their energy and intelligence.
