Agave Xylonacantha

Agave xylonacantha, whose name means 'woody-spined,' is native to the states of Hidalgo, Veracruz, and San Luis Potosí in Mexico. Its most striking feature is the row of large, woody, tooth-like spines along the leaf margins—significantly larger and more prominent than the teeth of most agave species. These irregular, fang-like projections give the plant a rugged, almost prehistoric appearance that strongly appeals to collectors who favor bold, aggressive-looking plants. The narrow, gray-green to blue-green leaves form a rosette reaching 40–80 cm tall. Growth rate is moderate. Provide full sun and a well-draining soil mix; water when the substrate dries out and reduce to monthly in winter. Cold hardiness is around 5–8°C—protect from frost. Its distinctive 'warrior' aesthetic sets it apart from titanota and horrida, and its relative scarcity in Japanese cultivation adds to its appeal among serious enthusiasts.
