Agave wocomahi
A large agave from Sinaloa to Chihuahua, Mexico. Traditionally used by the indigenous Tarahumara people for food and fermented beverages. Broad, blue-tinged leaves are characteristic.
Agave wocomahi is a medium to large agave native to mountain regions at 1,500–2,500 m elevation in Chihuahua, Durango, and Sinaloa, Mexico, particularly in the Sierra Madre Occidental. Its name derives from the Tarahumara indigenous language. Broad blue-gray to gray-green leaves spread gracefully, with conspicuous dark brown marginal teeth arranged in regular patterns. Mature rosettes reach 80–120 cm in diameter, presenting an imposing form. Its high-altitude habitat confers relatively good cold hardiness to approximately -5°C. It prefers well-draining soil and bright light but benefits from protection against strong afternoon sun. Not widely available in cultivation, it holds high value as a collector's item and is particularly sought after by enthusiasts of montane agave species.
