Agave pygmaea
A palm-sized dwarf agave. Also called Dragon Toes, charming for its cute size.
Agave pygmaea, also known as 'Dragon Toes,' is a dwarf species native to Oaxaca, Mexico. True to its name, mature plants rarely exceed 10–20 cm in diameter, forming a tight rosette of thick, short leaves with serrated marginal teeth. Its perfectly miniaturized form and endearing small scale have made it a favorite among collectors who appreciate compact species. Growth is extremely slow, allowing it to be grown in small pots for many years without repotting. Full sun is preferred, though protection from the most intense summer sun is advisable to prevent leaf scorch. Water minimally—once a month in winter—and use a sharply draining soil mix. Cold tolerance is around 5°C; protect from frost. Its small footprint makes it suitable for windowsills and desktops. Availability in Japan is limited, and specimens are eagerly sought when they appear in the market.
