Lymphocystis

A disease where cauliflower-like white masses develop on fins and body.

• Cause: Iridovirus infection
• Symptoms: White lumpy growths on fins and body

• Note: Appearance is unsightly but rarely life-threatening

Trichodina

A disease where the body appears covered in a white film.

Oodinium (Marine Velvet Disease)

Similar to ich but with finer spots, appearing like gold dust sprinkled on the body.

• Cause: Parasitic dinoflagellate Oodinium
• Symptoms: Very fine white to gold spots on body, respiratory distress, loss of appetite
• Treatment: Copper ion treatment, darkening (the parasite photosynthesizes)
• Caution: Progresses rapidly, so early detection is critical

Daily Prevention Through Maintenance

1. Water Quality Stability

The greatest preventive measure is maintaining stable water quality. Don't neglect regular water changes (10-15% weekly), protein skimmer cleaning, and filter maintenance.

2. Quarantine New Fish

When introducing new fish, observe them in a quarantine tank for 2-4 weeks before adding to the main tank. This prevents disease introduction.

3. Stress Reduction

Overcrowding, incompatible tankmates, and sudden water quality changes cause stress. Stress lowers immunity and increases disease risk.
