Orchid Repotting Guide: Timing, Steps & Media Selection

Orchid repotting needs to be done every 2–3 years to maintain plant health. Following proper timing and procedures minimizes root damage while refreshing the plant.

Signs That Repotting Is Needed

Consider repotting when you observe:

• Deteriorated potting medium: Sphagnum moss has turned black and crumbly, bark has begun rotting
• Roots overflowing the pot: The pot is packed full and cramped
• Root rot: Plant is wobbly, roots are brown and hollow
• Poor drainage: Pot stays wet for extended periods after watering

Optimal Repotting Timing

• General best time: Spring (April–May) when new roots begin growing
• Phalaenopsis: Immediately after flowering ends (spring–early summer)
• Cymbidium: After flowering (March–April)
• Dendrobium: Spring when new shoots begin
• Avoid summer heat and winter cold when roots are easily damaged

Repotting Procedure

1. Remove the plant: Press the outside of the pot to loosen roots while extracting
2. Remove old potting medium: Carefully remove without damaging roots
3. Check root condition: Distinguish healthy roots (white to green, firm) from damaged roots (brown, hollow)
4. Trim damaged roots: Cut at the base with clean scissors. Apply fungicide to cut surfaces
5. Plant in new pot with fresh medium: Spread roots while securing
6. Withhold water: Don't water for 1–2 weeks to let cut surfaces heal
