Guide to overwintering medaka: outdoor freeze protection, indoor heated management, and spring recovery.
Medaka can survive Japanese winters outdoors but need proper preparation to ensure safe overwintering.
Below 15C: Activity decreases. Below 10C: Nearly motionless. Below 5C: Full hibernation at tank bottom. Near 0C: Survivable if bottom doesn't freeze.
Ensure minimum 20cm water depth. Styrofoam boxes provide best insulation. Float styrofoam pieces to prevent full surface freezing. Stop feeding below 10C — food rots in cold digestive systems.
Unheated: Place near window, 10C+ allows light feeding. Heated: 18-20C heater enables year-round keeping and breeding.
Don't stir the water, don't over-change water (temperature shock), don't feed hibernating fish, don't move containers.
Bri-Choku breeders sell outdoor-overwintered medaka proven for cold hardiness.
