Guide to medaka diseases: ich, cotton mold, wasting disease, dropsy — symptoms, treatments, and salt bath procedures.
Medaka are hardy but vulnerable to common fish diseases when water quality drops or temperatures swing rapidly.
Ich: White spots, treat by raising temperature to 28C + methylene blue + 0.5% salt. Cotton Mold: White fuzzy growth, treat with methylene blue + salt. Wasting Disease: Progressive thinning despite eating, isolate and treat with Green-F Gold. Dropsy: Raised scales, treat early with antibacterials + salt (poor prognosis if advanced).
5g salt per 1L of dechlorinated water. Aeration required. Monitor for 1 week. Gradually return to fresh water over 1-2 days.
Regular water changes, avoid overcrowding, quarantine new arrivals for 1 week, avoid sudden temperature changes.
Bri-Choku breeders maintain healthy stock and can advise on treatment if issues arise.
