Guide to reef-safe fish: safety ratings by family for gobies, clownfish, wrasses, tangs, and angelfish.
Understanding which fish are safe for coral tanks is essential for reef keepers. Fish are rated from fully reef-safe to completely reef-unsafe.
Gobies: Fully safe. Clownfish: Mostly safe. Damsels: Safe. Tangs: Mostly safe (may nip when hungry). Wrasses: Mostly safe (large species may eat small polyps). Angelfish: Caution needed (individual variation in nipping). Butterflyfish: Not reef-safe (most eat coral).
Keep angelfish well-fed with nori always available. Choose SPS over LPS (less likely to be nipped). Remove fish immediately if persistent nipping is observed.
Tell breeders "I want this for a reef tank" and they'll recommend suitable individuals.
