Summer beetle and stag beetle care: maintaining proper temperatures, substrate moisture, and jelly replacement frequency.
Summer is when beetles and stag beetles are most active, but enclosure temperatures above 30°C are lethal for many species. Japanese giant stag beetles and exotic stag beetles are particularly heat-sensitive, with ideal keeping temperatures of 23–25°C. Install thermometers in enclosures for constant monitoring.
Japanese rhinoceros beetles are relatively heat-tolerant, but extended exposure above 30°C shortens lifespan. Exotic species like Hercules beetles and rainbow stag beetles prefer temperatures around 25°C, making summer temperature management especially important. Using digital temperature/humidity meters simplifies monitoring.
Place enclosures in the coolest room of the house. North-facing rooms and entryways tend to be cooler. Air conditioning is essential for valuable individuals or temperature-sensitive species. Never place in direct sunlight.
Without AC, a foam cooler box with ice packs creates a makeshift cooling environment. However, regulate ice pack quantity to prevent over-cooling and wrap in towels to avoid direct contact with enclosures. Some hobbyists repurpose wine coolers.
Summer accelerates jelly deterioration, so daily replacement is ideal. Old jelly becomes a breeding ground for fruit flies. Substrate (bedding) dries quickly in summer—mist the surface to maintain appropriate humidity. Avoid over-watering—the right moisture level is when substrate holds its shape loosely when squeezed.
Choose high-protein jelly for females during egg-laying season and breeding individuals. Selecting jelly with composition similar to natural tree sap provides a more natural nutritional balance. Cutting jelly in half with a jelly cutter makes it easier to eat and reduces waste.
Fruit fly infestations are the biggest nuisance of summer insect keeping. Placing fruit fly prevention sheets under enclosure lids blocks entry from outside. Microwave-heating or sun-drying substrate before use also kills embedded fruit fly eggs.
If fruit flies appear, complete substrate replacement is the most reliable solution. Temporarily transfer the insects to another enclosure and replace with fresh substrate. Fruit fly traps placed around enclosures help eliminate adults.
Summer activity increases lead to intensified male fighting. Always house valuable individuals separately. Avoid housing females with males except when setting up breeding pairs, to prevent exhaustion.
Fighting damage such as lost tarsal segments (leg claws) or broken mandibles is permanent. Long-lived species like Japanese giant stag beetles can be enjoyed for years, making individual housing for careful management the foundation of long-term keeping.
On Buri-Choku, you can purchase carefully raised beetles and stag beetles directly from breeders. Bloodline and keeping environment questions can be directed to breeders.
