Houseplant summer care: shading, watering frequency, AC precautions, and troubleshooting heat-stressed plants.
Strong summer direct sunlight causes leaf burn in houseplants. Brown discoloration or white bleaching of leaves are typical symptoms. Move window-side plants to behind a sheer curtain or further from the window.
Most houseplants originate from tropical forest floors, growing under dappled light rather than direct sun. Araceae family plants like monstera, pothos, and philodendron are particularly vulnerable to strong direct sunlight—bright indirect light is optimal. Leaf burn damage is irreversible, making prevention paramount.
Summer's high temperatures and rapid evaporation require increased watering frequency. Water thoroughly when the topsoil is dry, until water flows from drainage holes. However, always discard water collected in saucers. Over-watering causes root rot, with risk amplified in high temperatures.
The best watering time is cool morning hours. Midday watering creates sauna-like conditions inside the pot, potentially damaging roots. Watering needs vary by species—drought-loving types like sansevieria require less frequent watering than other houseplants.
Air conditioning dries indoor air, stressing houseplants. Mist leaves (leaf water) morning and evening to maintain surface humidity. Never place plants where AC airflow hits directly.
Grouping plants together raises collective humidity through transpiration. A pebble tray—a saucer with pebbles and water beneath the pot—is a simple, effective humidity solution. Humidifiers placed near plants also efficiently maintain moisture levels.
Hot, dry conditions cause spider mite populations to explode. Regularly check leaf undersides—tiny white dots or web-like threads indicate infestation. Wash off with leaf misting or treat with specialized pesticides. Regular leaf misting serves as effective prevention.
Beyond spider mites, summer also increases scale insect and aphid damage. Regularly inspect new growth and leaf bases for cottony white masses or tiny insects. Light infestations can often be managed by wiping with a damp cloth.
Many houseplants are in their peak growing season during summer. Liquid fertilizer every two weeks or slow-release granular fertilizer supports healthy growth. However, avoid fertilizing plants weakened by sunburn or suffering root binding—this can be counterproductive.
When extreme heat causes growth to stall, withhold fertilizer. Resume once cooler weather restarts growth.
