A step-by-step guide to setting up a coral tank from scratch: equipment selection, live rock placement, water cycling, and coral introduction.
A coral tank requires an even more stable environment than a fish-only marine tank. Taking your time and following the proper steps is the shortest path to success. Here's a 9-step guide to setting up a coral tank.
For coral keeping, prepare the following equipment. Compared to fish-only setups, you'll additionally need specialized lighting and a calcium reactor.
Select a level, stable location away from direct sunlight. Always use an aquarium stand rated for the weight. A 60cm tank exceeds 80kg when filled. Check floor strength too.
Live rock serves as natural biological filtration and a base for placing corals. Use approximately 1kg per 10 liters of total water volume. Build with good water flow in mind—don't pack too tightly.
Dissolve synthetic sea salt in RO water (purified water) and adjust to specific gravity 1.024-1.025. Add at water temperature around 25°C. Mix in buckets before adding to the tank for more stable specific gravity.
Start all equipment. Activate the protein skimmer, wavemakers, heater, and lighting in sequence, confirming each operates normally. Do not add any livestock at this stage.
Wait for live rock bacteria to activate and establish the ammonia → nitrite → nitrate decomposition cycle. Test water quality regularly and confirm ammonia and nitrite have reached zero. Skipping this step causes coral die-off.
Add snails (Nassarius, Trochus), hermit crabs, etc. first. They serve as important algae cleaners on glass and rocks.
Once water quality stabilizes, it's finally time to add corals. Start with hardy soft corals (Zoanthids, Green Star Polyps, etc.). Don't add many at once—add 2-3 pieces at 1-2 week intervals.
Continue with approximately 10% weekly water changes, trace element supplementation, and lighting timer management. A stable coral tank shows minimal daily changes. If sudden changes occur, immediately check water quality.
On Bri-Choku, you can not only purchase specimens from experienced coral breeders but also consult them about tank setup. First-timers are welcome to take advantage of this resource.
