Bonsai wiring basics—wire selection, wrapping techniques, bending direction, removal timing, and bite prevention.
Wiring is the most fundamental technique for designing bonsai tree form. Wrapping wire of appropriate thickness correctly lets you freely control branch angles and direction. Even beginners can safely perform wiring with the basics mastered.
Aluminum Wire: - Soft and easy to bend; suited for beginners and thin branches - Corrosion-resistant and gentle on bark - Commonly available in 1-4 mm thicknesses for versatile use
Copper Wire: - Hard with strong holding power; suited for thick or stubborn branch correction - Achieves stronger correction with thinner gauges than aluminum - Difficult to bend, making it challenging for beginners
Choosing Wire Thickness: - Use approximately 1/3 to 1/4 of the branch thickness as a guide - Too thin provides insufficient corrective force; too thick risks bark damage - When securing two branches from the same direction, wrapping both with one wire ("twin wiring") is efficient
Procedure: 1. Anchor the wire end to the trunk or a thick branch (45-60 degree angle is standard) 2. Wrap spirally along the branch---evenly spaced, neither too tight nor too loose 3. Cut excess wire at the branch tip 4. After wiring, slowly and carefully bend the branch to the target angle
Precautions: - Too loose provides no corrective effect; too tight causes wire marks (scarring) - Avoid placing wire over buds, leaves, or flowers - Apply force gradually when bending to prevent breakage
Deciduous Trees (Maple, Zelkova, etc.) - Winter (November-March) when leaves have dropped provides clear visibility and easy working - Branches are more pliable before sap begins flowing
Conifers (Shimpaku, Pine, etc.) - Possible year-round, but avoid post-spring budding and hot summer periods - Fall through winter is least stressful for the tree
Remove wire before it bites into the bark. Form typically sets in 3-6 months, but growing season growth can cause faster embedding.
Removal Tips: - Use nippers to cut wire into small pieces for removal (never pull) - Wire marks heal naturally if shallow, but deep embedding leaves permanent scars
Many BuriChoku sellers offer bonsai that have been shaped through wiring. You can ask sellers about current wire status and future form direction, making bonsai accessible even for beginners. Find your perfect tree today.
