Small goat from West Africa. Hardy, disease-resistant, and friendly. Loves jumping and playing, best suited for homes with outdoor space.
The pygmy goat is a small domestic goat breed originating from the Cameroon Dwarf goat of West Africa (primarily Cameroon and Nigeria), developed through selective breeding for compact size and friendly temperament. Adults measure 40–55 cm at the shoulder and weigh 24–39 kg, with males larger than females. Their small size, social nature, and high intelligence have made them extremely popular as companion animals in Western countries. They bond readily with people and are playful and curious. Being active climbers and jumpers, they require a secure outdoor area with fencing at least 1.5 m high to prevent escapes. Multiple animals are strongly recommended, as solitary goats become stressed. Diet is herbivorous: quality grass hay, pasture, and limited appropriate pellets. Toxic plants (roses, rhododendrons, etc.) must be strictly excluded. Fresh water must be available at all times. Common health concerns include intestinal parasites, hoof disease, and respiratory infections. Lifespan is 10–15 years.
