Fancy Mouse

The fancy mouse is the domesticated form of the house mouse (Mus musculus), selectively bred for centuries for coat color, pattern, and temperament. Adults measure 6–10 cm in body length with a tail of approximately the same length, and weigh 25–50 g. Selective breeding has produced an enormous variety of colors and patterns—including white, black, brown, pied, and satin—as well as coat types such as long-haired and rex (curly). Fancy mice are extremely fast and agile, making them better suited for observation than for regular hands-on handling. Females can be kept in social groups, while males are typically housed alone due to territorial aggression. A glass tank enclosure is recommended to prevent escapes. Essential furnishings include a wheel (minimum 15 cm diameter), deep bedding for burrowing, and multiple hiding spots. Diet is omnivorous: quality mouse mix or pellets supplemented with fresh vegetables. Common health issues include tumors, respiratory infections, and ectoparasites. Lifespan is 1.5–3 years.
