Atelerix albiventris
The most common pet hedgehog worldwide, also known as the four-toed hedgehog. Adorable when curled up, with growing color varieties.
The African pygmy hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris), also called the four-toed hedgehog, is native to the savannas and grasslands of central and eastern Africa. It is the species most commonly kept as a pet worldwide under the name 'hedgehog.' Adults measure 15–25 cm and weigh 250–600 g. Their back is covered with 5,000–6,000 hollow, keratinized spines (modified hairs) used for defense; when threatened, they curl into a tight ball. Naturally solitary and nocturnal, they can become relatively tame with early, consistent handling, though individual temperament varies considerably. Temperature regulation is the most critical aspect of their care: the enclosure must be maintained at 25–28 °C year-round. Temperatures below 22 °C induce a dangerous torpor, while heat above 32 °C risks estivation. Year-round air conditioning is essential in Japan's climate. Diet is insectivorous: hedgehog-specific kibble supplemented with mealworms and crickets. Common health concerns include Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome (WHS), neoplasia, mite infestation, and ringworm. Lifespan is 3–6 years.
