Montipora sp.
Second most popular SPS coral after Acropora. Diverse forms including plate and branching. Easier SPS entry point.
Montipora (family Acroporidae) is the second most species-rich coral genus with over 85 described species, displaying encrusting, plating, and branching growth forms. Its polyps are minute (1–2 mm diameter), and colonies come in brilliant greens, purples, oranges, and pinks that fluoresce beautifully under reef lighting. Hardier than Acropora yet still demanding stable reef chemistry—calcium 400–450 ppm, alkalinity 8–9 dKH—Montipora thrives under moderate to strong lighting (200–350 PAR) and moderate to strong flow, making it an ideal gateway into small-polyp stony coral keeping. Encrusting forms spread rapidly and require periodic trimming.
