Euphyllia ancora
An LPS coral with anchor-shaped tentacles. Related to hammer coral with similar care.
Euphyllia ancora (family Euphylliidae), the hammer or anchor coral, is a large-polyp stony coral from Indo-Pacific reef slopes and lagoons. Its defining feature is the distinctive T-shaped or anchor-shaped tip at the end of each fleshy tentacle, giving the coral its common names. Colors span green, gold, gray, and multicolored forms, with fluorescent green individuals being the most popular. The thick, undulating tentacles swaying in current make E. ancora one of the most visually captivating LPS in the reef hobby worldwide. Moderate lighting (100–200 PAR) and a moderate, steady flow sufficient to animate the tentacles without causing stress are ideal. Stable parameters (24–27°C, KH 8–10, Ca 400–430 ppm) are important for long-term health. Extended sweeper tentacles emerge nightly, capable of stinging neighboring corals, so generous spacing is mandatory. Intrageneric compatibility with other Euphyllia species is relatively good. Weekly target feeding with shrimp or mysis enhances polyp volume and color. Fragging by splitting the skeleton is straightforward, making this one of the most readily propagated LPS corals.
