Agave Colorata

Agave colorata is a medium-sized species from the desert regions of Sonora, Mexico. Its broad, heavily glaucous blue-gray leaves are edged with reddish-brown to dark brown teeth, creating a vivid color contrast that justifies the name 'colorata' (colorful). Regular bud imprints on the leaf surfaces add further textural interest. Mature rosettes reach 30–50 cm tall and 50–80 cm wide, making them well-suited to container growing. Growth is slow. Full sun is essential—reduced light causes the distinctive glaucous coating to diminish. Water only after the soil has completely dried, reducing to near-drought in winter. A sharply draining soil mix is critical to prevent rot, as this desert species is particularly sensitive to excess moisture. Cold hardiness extends to about 5°C; protect from frost. Its striking blue-and-rust coloration places it among the most ornamentally appealing agave species, and it is highly regarded by collectors alongside Agave titanota.
