Agave Applanata

Agave applanata is a medium to large species native to dry highlands in Oaxaca, Puebla, and Hidalgo, Mexico. The name 'applanata' (flattened) describes the way its broad leaves spread nearly horizontally, creating a wide, flat rosette silhouette distinctive from the more vase-shaped forms of many agaves. The leaves are strongly glaucous silver-blue to powdery white with clear bud imprints, marginal teeth, and a stout terminal spine. Mature rosettes reach 60–100 cm tall and 100–150 cm wide. Growth is slow. Full sun is essential for the best blue-white leaf color. Water sparingly with excellent drainage; cold hardiness is around 5°C. The cultivar 'Cream Spike,' bearing creamy yellow to golden marginal variegation, is especially popular and widely available among collectors. The flat, spreading rosette form and beautiful blue-silver coloration make A. applanata and its cultivars excellent choices for large containers or garden planting where a low, wide accent is desired.
