Guide to selecting marine angelfish: dwarf vs large species, reef compatibility, and care difficulty.
Marine angelfish (Pomacanthidae) are among the most colorful reef fish, but species vary dramatically in care difficulty and coral compatibility.
Coral Beauty, Flame Angel, and Cherub Pygmy Angel are popular choices. Most are moderately reef-safe with individual variation in coral nipping behavior.
Emperor Angel and Majestic Angel require 120cm+ tanks. Juvenile-to-adult color transformation is a major attraction.
Dwarf angels have roughly 50% chance of nipping corals. Large angels almost certainly will. SPS are nipped less than LPS. Keep fish well-fed with nori available to divert interest from corals.
One per species per tank is the standard. Different genera of dwarf angels can sometimes coexist in larger tanks.
Bri-Choku breeders offer pellet-trained angelfish and can advise on individual temperament and coral compatibility.
