How to propagate houseplants: stem cuttings, water propagation, division, air layering, and leaf cuttings for popular species.
Houseplants can be propagated through a variety of methods. Choosing the right method for each species allows you to multiply your favorite plants with ease.
Ideal for plants with aerial roots or nodes on their stems, such as Monstera and Pothos. Cut below a node and root in water or moist sphagnum moss. For water propagation, change the water every 2–3 days and transplant to soil once roots exceed 5cm. Applying rooting hormone to the cut end increases success rates.
Suited for plants that produce multiple stems from the base, such as Spathiphyllum and Calathea. Remove from the pot, carefully separate the roots, and divide at natural separation points. Confirm that each division has sufficient roots before planting.
Effective for woody plants where cuttings are difficult, such as Ficus (rubber plants). Make an incision in the stem, wrap with moistened sphagnum moss, and secure with plastic wrap. Roots will emerge in 1–2 months, after which you cut below the roots to create an independent plant.
Sansevieria can be propagated by cutting leaves into 5–10cm sections and inserting them into dry soil. To avoid confusion about orientation, mark the top before cutting.
On Buri-Choku, you can purchase directly from specialist houseplant growers. Rare variegated varieties and large specimens are well-stocked, and grower-quality healthy plants are delivered. Propagation advice is also available for beginners.
