A collection of frequently asked questions about bonsai and alpine plant care, covering watering, pruning, repotting, and wild grass management
Bonsai are fundamentally outdoor plants. Key tasks include daily watering, regular fertilizing, pruning and wiring, and repotting every few years. Prolonged indoor display is not recommended — return trees outdoors promptly after showing.
The basic rule is to water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom once the topsoil has dried. In summer, water twice daily (morning and evening); in winter, every 2–3 days. Watering is the single most important aspect of bonsai care.
Japanese black pine, Japanese maple, zelkova, Japanese white pine, and cherry are recommended. Shohin (palm-sized) bonsai are space-friendly and great for practice. Check out actual listings in our Bonsai & Alpine Plants category.
There are three types: bud pinching, leaf trimming (defoliation), and branch pruning. The fundamental approach is to remove crossing, inward-growing, and parallel branches to improve airflow and light. For pruning tips, consult growers in our Bonsai & Alpine Plants category.
Wiring is a technique where aluminum or copper wire is wrapped around trunks and branches to shape the tree. Apply at a 45-degree angle and remove before it bites into the bark. Beginners should practice on small branches first.
Repot every 2–3 years in spring (March–April). Remove old soil, trim overgrown roots, and replant in bonsai soil. Keep the tree in partial shade for about two weeks after repotting to recover.
Place solid organic fertilizer cakes on the soil in spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November). Pause during intense summer heat and winter dormancy. Do not fertilize right after repotting or when the tree is weakened.
Place in a well-ventilated, partially shaded spot and plant in well-draining soil. Water daily, taking extra care in summer. Most alpine plants die back in winter but re-sprout in spring. Their charm lies in the seasonal variety of blooms they offer.

In milder regions, overwintering under eaves is usually sufficient; in colder areas, use a cold frame or insulate pots with polystyrene foam. Water during daytime to avoid freezing. Subtropical species should be brought indoors. If you need help, feel free to contact us.
