A thorough guide to coral dipping and acclimation: pest removal procedures for flatworms and red bugs, drip acclimation techniques, and post-introduction monitoring tips.
When acquiring new corals, introducing them directly into the aquarium as-is is extremely risky. Pests such as flatworms, red bugs, and nudibranchs often hide on coral surfaces and in gaps between live rocks, and when these enter the aquarium, they cause serious damage to existing corals. By performing dipping (medication baths) and careful acclimation, you can safely introduce new corals while preventing pest introduction and minimizing stress to the corals.
Dipping is the process of immersing corals in a specialized solution for a short period to remove pests and parasites attached to the surface. Representative dipping agents include Coral RX, Bayer, and Revive Coral Cleaner. Coral RX is the most common and is effective against a wide range of pests. Bayer is particularly noted for its effectiveness against flatworms. Usage methods vary by product, but basically, the solution is diluted with aquarium water, and corals are immersed for 5-10 minutes. Always follow the product instructions for solution concentration and immersion time. Excessive concentration or prolonged immersion can damage the corals themselves.
First, place aquarium water in a clean container and add the recommended amount of dipping agent. Slowly immerse the coral in the solution, using a dropper or pipette to create water flow and ensure the solution reaches all areas. During immersion, pests detach and fall to the bottom of the container, making them easier to spot if you use a white container. Flatworms appear as semi-transparent, flat organisms, while red bugs are visible as small red dots. After immersion, remove the coral from the solution and gently rinse it in separate aquarium water to wash away the medication. Always discard the solution and never put it back in the aquarium. Since it's difficult to remove all pest eggs in a single dipping, it's effective to perform dipping again after one week.
After dipping is complete, proceed with acclimation. The drip method is ideal for acclimating corals. Transfer the transport water containing the coral to a container, and gradually add aquarium water through an air tube, one drop at a time. Do this over 30-60 minutes at a rate of 1-2 drops per second until the transport water volume doubles or triples. During this process, water temperature, salinity, and pH gradually approach the values of the aquarium water. Rapid changes in salinity in particular cause significant stress to corals, so it's important to adjust gradually. Regarding water temperature, if the temperature difference between transport water and aquarium water is 2 degrees or more, it's ideal to float the container in the aquarium to match the temperature before starting dipping.
Once acclimation is complete, introduce the coral to the aquarium. Rather than placing it in its final location immediately, first place it in an area with lower light intensity and water flow. Exposing corals stressed from transport and dipping to strong light risks bleaching from light shock. It's safer to gradually move it to brighter areas over about a week. In particular, SPS corals (such as Acropora) are sensitive to environmental changes and require careful, gradual relocation. Soft corals and LPS corals are relatively more adaptable, but even these should avoid sudden environmental changes. For several days after introduction, carefully observe polyp extension and mucus secretion.
Success rates for coral introduction increase dramatically when performed with proper dipping and acclimation. With br-choku, breeders provide direct advice on pre-shipment care conditions and recommended dipping methods, so even first-time coral keepers can feel confident. Obtain healthy specimens from trustworthy breeders and follow proper introduction procedures to create a beautiful reef tank.
