Aldrovanda vesiculosa, the waterwheel plant, is the only aquatic species of snap-trap carnivorous plant. This rootless, free-floating plant catches tiny aquatic organisms with rapid-closing traps similar to miniature Venus flytraps arranged in whorls along its stem.
Cultivation requires clean, slightly acidic water (pH 5.5-6.5), strong sunlight, and warm temperatures (20-30°C during growth). Grow in shallow outdoor containers with no substrate -- Aldrovanda floats freely. Add a few companion plants like bladderwort or aquatic mosses. Avoid tap water with high mineral content; rainwater or distilled water is ideal.
Winter management varies by climate. In mild regions, turions (winter buds) form naturally and survive cold water. In colder areas, collect turions and store in cold water in a refrigerator until spring. Aldrovanda is endangered worldwide, making responsible cultivation and propagation valuable conservation efforts.
