Bird Hand-Feeding Guide: Chick Rearing & Taming

Hand-feeding (sashie) bird chicks, when done properly, is a precious time for building trust with the owner. Even adult birds can be hand-tamed with patience. Here we cover chick rearing through hand-feeding and hand-taming techniques.

Hand-Feeding Basics

Hand-feeding means giving food by hand to chicks that cannot yet eat independently.

Equipment Needed: - Hand-feeding formula (commercial powder food) - Syringe-type feeder or small spoon - Brooder (heated enclosure) or temperature-controlled heating equipment - Thermometer and hygrometer

Basic Procedure: 1. Mix powder formula with hot water to approximately body temperature (40-42 degrees C) 2. Slowly deliver toward the chick's crop area 3. When the crop is visibly full, stop---don't overfeed 4. Discard leftover formula and clean equipment thoroughly

Feeding Frequency and Temperature Management

Frequency Guidelines (By Age): - Hatch to 1 week: Every 1-2 hours (including nighttime) - 1-2 weeks: Every 3-4 hours - 2-3 weeks: Gradually reduce to every 3-4 hours - 3+ weeks: Begin encouraging self-feeding transition

Temperature Management: - Just hatched: 32-35 degrees C - Around 2 weeks: 28-32 degrees C - 3-4 weeks: 25-28 degrees C - Fully feathered: Room temperature is fine (maintain above 20 degrees C)

Low temperatures drain chick energy, leading to digestive failure or death. Temperature management is the highest priority.

Weaning Timing (Self-Feeding Transition)

• Once fully feathered and able to perch, begin self-feeding practice
• Place millet sprays and seeds in the cage; observe the chick pecking on its own
• Gradually reduce hand-feeding from twice daily (morning/evening), then morning only, to complete weaning
• Monitor weight stability throughout (watch for rapid weight loss)

Hand-Taming Techniques

From Chick Stage: - Provide physical contact during hand-feeding sessions - Daily hand-offered food creates the association: hand = safety and food - Daily consistency without rushing is the key

Taming Adult Birds: - Begin by talking through the cage to acclimate them to your presence - Place favorite treats on your hand and slowly approach (no forcing) - Slowly extend a finger like a "perch" and wait for the bird to step up voluntarily - Once perched, praise quietly and let them stay briefly before setting down
