10 common aquatic plant growing mistakes with solutions for foreground plants, stem plants, and shade plants.
Aquatic plant keeping looks simple but has many pitfalls. Here are 10 common mistakes beginners make and how to avoid them.
1. Insufficient Lighting
Using weak LED lights or no dedicated plant lighting. Most aquatic plants require 2000-4000 lumens for a 60cm tank. Low-light plants like Anubias and Java Fern are exceptions.
2. No CO2 Injection (When Needed)
Trying to grow demanding plants without CO2. Stem plants and carpeting plants almost always require CO2 supplementation. Start with DIY yeast-based CO2 or invest in a pressurized system.
3. Wrong Substrate
Using gravel or coral sand instead of nutrient-rich aqua soil. Most rooted plants need nutrient soil to thrive. For inert substrates, root tabs are essential.
4. Ignoring Algae
Letting algae take over without addressing the root cause. Algae thrives when light, CO2, and nutrients are unbalanced. Add cleanup crew (Amano shrimp, Otocinclus) and adjust parameters.
5. Not Planting Properly
Leaving plants in their wool/weight packaging or just floating them. Remove all packaging, separate stems, and plant individually with tweezers into the substrate.
6. Skipping Trimming
Letting stem plants grow to the surface unchecked. Lower leaves die from lack of light. Trim regularly and replant the tops for bushier growth.
7. Fertilizer Mistakes
Either no fertilization at all, or overdosing. Potassium and iron are always needed. Start with small doses and increase based on plant response and algae levels.
8. High Water Temperature
Not managing summer heat. Most plants prefer 22-28°C. Above 30°C, many species melt. Use cooling fans or air conditioning.
9. Skipping Water Changes
Believing a planted tank is self-sustaining. Weekly 1/3 water changes are essential to remove excess nutrients and replenish trace elements.
10. Choosing Wrong Plants
Selecting plants that don't match your setup. Match plant requirements to your lighting, CO2, and substrate. Start with easy species if you're a beginner.
