# Winter Care Guide: Overwintering Agave in Japan
Most agave tolerate cold to some extent, but Japan's winter low temperatures and insufficient sunlight significantly impact growth. Particularly popular varieties like Titanota and Oteroi are easily damaged below 5°C, and bringing them indoors is necessary for safe overwintering. We explain how to create a winter-survival environment utilizing LED lights and heating mats.
Consider bringing your agave indoors when the minimum temperature begins to drop below 10°C. Cold hardiness varies by variety, but most agave begin to show leaf damage below 5°C. Aim to maintain a minimum indoor temperature of at least 10°C. A heated room is ideal, but even in an unheated room, you can avoid extreme low temperatures by keeping the plants away from windows and placing them deep inside. Installing a thermometer near the plant and recording minimum and maximum temperatures provides useful management reference. An environment where the temperature difference between day and night stays within 10°C is preferable.
Heating mats warm the root zone from the bottom of the pot and are highly effective for winter agave care. The mat's set temperature should be around 25–30°C, allowing you to maintain soil temperature at 15–20°C. Choosing a product with a thermostat makes temperature control easier. Placing the pot directly on the mat can cause excessive heat, so insert a wire rack or piece of cardboard to fine-tune the temperature. Heating mats maintain root activity and prevent complete dormancy, resulting in smoother spring growth. The electricity cost is also economical at around a few hundred yen per month per mat.
Indoor environments in winter severely lack sunlight. Even near windows, winter daylight hours are short, and with prolonged cloudy weather, agave quickly become leggy. Using LED lights to supplement about 12 hours of light per day helps maintain a compact plant form. LED lights for overwintering don't necessarily need high output. For maintenance purposes, even a panel around 50W provides sufficient effect. Keep the distance between the plant and light at around 20–30cm, adjusting as you observe the leaves. Timer control of LED light duration is the most reliable approach.
Winter agave growth slows, so reduce watering significantly. As a guideline, water 2–3 times per month when using a heating mat, or about once per month if not using one. Water during clear mornings and be careful not to let the soil stay wet for extended periods. In winter, soil dries more slowly, so less water than during the growing season is sufficient. Leaf misting is generally unnecessary; water collecting at leaf bases actually causes rot. If indoor humidity is extremely low, maintaining around 40% with a humidifier helps, but avoid excessive moisture.
Once temperatures consistently exceed 15°C, begin transitioning outdoors. Sudden direct sunlight causes leaf burn, so start with cloudy days or shade and gradually acclimate over 1–2 weeks. Simultaneously increase watering frequency gradually and transition to growing-season care. Through br-choku, you can purchase agave in spring that have been managed in optimal environments during winter. Since you can consult directly with breeders about overwintering methods and LED setups, you can tackle indoor overwintering with confidence even as a beginner.
