Distinctive hatchet-shaped body. Surface-dwelling fish that swims just below water line. Jumping risk — lid essential.
Hatchetfish (family Gasteropelecidae) are surface-dwelling characins native to the Amazon and Orinoco River basins of South America. Their name derives from their distinctive body shape — laterally compressed with a dramatically enlarged keel resembling the blade of a hatchet. Common aquarium species include the silver hatchetfish (Gasteropelecus sternicla), the marbled hatchetfish (Carnegiella strigata), and others. Reaching 3–6 cm, they possess a remarkable ability unique among freshwater fish: by rapidly vibrating their large pectoral fins, they can break the water surface and glide 1–3 meters through the air — used both for escaping predators and for catching insects hovering above the water. In aquariums, they occupy the surface zone, creating visual interest in an area typically left empty by other fish. Water conditions of pH 6.0–7.5 at 24–28°C are suitable. A secure, tight-fitting lid is absolutely mandatory due to their exceptional jumping ability. They accept floating pellets, fine flake, and small insects. Peaceful with most mid- and bottom-dwelling species, they require patient drip acclimation as they are somewhat sensitive to transport stress.
