Maidenhair Fern

Adiantum, the maidenhair fern, is a genus of about 250 species of ferns in the subfamily Vittarioideae of the family Pteridaceae, distributed across tropical and temperate regions worldwide. The genus name comes from the Greek meaning 'unwetted', referring to the fronds' ability to shed water without becoming wet. Delicate fan-shaped leaflets arranged on glossy black stems create an extraordinarily elegant appearance unlike any other houseplant. Maidenhair ferns require bright shade — direct sunlight causes rapid leaf scorch — and consistently moist soil; they respond quickly to drought by curling and desiccating. High humidity (above 60%) is essential, making bathrooms or humid kitchens ideal locations. Regular misting is beneficial. Though demanding in care, their exceptional delicacy and grace make them a prized choice for experienced plant enthusiasts.
