The Standard Dachshund is the original and largest of the three Dachshund size varieties, with a chest circumference of more than 35 centimeters. It was originally developed in Germany for hunting badgers, using its elongated body and short legs to enter burrows. Like all Dachshunds, the Standard comes in three coat types—smooth, long-haired, and wire-haired—and a wide range of colors. The breed is curious, lively, and courageous, with a bold personality despite its small stature. Intervertebral disc disease is the breed's most serious health concern due to its distinctive body shape.
