The Samoyed is a large herding dog breed with a thick, white, double-layer coat. It is a spitz-type dog that takes its name from the Samoyedic peoples of Siberia. These nomadic reindeer herders bred the dogs to help with herding, sled pulling, and keeping their owners warm at night. Samoyeds are known for their friendly and gentle temperament and their characteristic "Sammy smile," caused by the upturned corners of their mouths. They are highly social dogs that thrive on human companionship and require regular exercise, particularly in cooler climates.
