The Mameshiba, or Mame Shiba, is a smaller variety of the Shiba Inu developed in Japan. "Mame" means "bean" in Japanese, referring to its compact size, typically weighing 4–6 kg. It retains the dignified, independent character of the standard Shiba Inu in a more apartment-friendly size. The Mameshiba is not officially recognized as a separate breed by major Japanese kennel clubs. Like the standard Shiba, it is loyal, brave, and independent-minded, with the characteristic curled tail and erect ears of the Shiba breed.
