A unique LPS coral that can move independently. Disc-shaped body moves across sand bed.
Fungia (family Fungiidae) is a genus of solitary large-polyp stony corals from Indo-Pacific reef flats and sandy lagoon floors. Disc- or oval-shaped skeletons 5–30 cm in diameter lie unattached on sand or rubble, classifying them as free-living corals capable of righting themselves using their own tentacles if overturned. Colors include green, pink, brown, and red. Moderate lighting (100–200 PAR) and gentle indirect flow are appropriate; the coral should be placed directly on sand and never cemented to rock. Stable parameters (24–27°C, KH 8–10, Ca 400–430 ppm) are standard. Their prominent central mouth accepts direct target feeding of shrimp, mussel, or fish flesh 1–2 times weekly, significantly boosting growth. Extended inverted positioning is lethal, so specimens should be checked and righted promptly. Fungia's unusual lifestyle and eager feeding response make them engaging display animals.
