A carnivorous plant with underground Y-shaped traps, cute flowers above but trapping below.
Genlisea is a genus of roughly 30 species of carnivorous plants distributed across Africa and Central and South America, growing in wet terrestrial to semi-aquatic environments. Commonly called corkscrew plants, they are distinguished by highly modified subterranean leaves in the form of hollow, Y-shaped tubes lined with inward-pointing hairs—a one-way lobster-pot mechanism that traps and guides microorganisms (particularly protozoans) inward to digestive glands. Above ground, the plants produce only small, innocuous leaves and attractive small flowers. Carnivory in Genlisea was first suggested by Charles Darwin but was not scientifically demonstrated until 1998. Cultivation requires consistently moist, acidic media (sphagnum or peat-perlite), tray watering with pure or rainwater, bright indirect to moderate light, and temperatures of 15–28°C.
