Tilia japonica
A tree deeply connected to Buddhism. Heart-shaped leaves are characteristic but can be reduced in bonsai. Yellow flowers and autumn color are attractive. Evokes temple atmosphere.
Tilia japonica (Bodaiju in Japanese), the Japanese lime or Japanese linden, is a deciduous tree in the family Malvaceae native to China, Japan, and East Asia. In Japan, it holds spiritual significance through its association with Buddhism — though botanically distinct from the Indian sacred fig (Bodhi tree) under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, it has been planted at temples as a symbolic substitute for centuries. The characteristic heart-shaped leaves and fragrant pale yellow summer flowers are the species' most distinctive features. In bonsai, the characteristic leaf shape and the tree's deep religious associations give it a unique cultural resonance that other species cannot replicate.
