A foreground-midground plant with small oval leaves growing densely. Perfect for creating green meadow.
Staurogyne repens is a foreground-to-midground aquatic plant in the family Acanthaceae, native to Brazil (Rio Cristalino basin). Its distinctive growth habit of small bright-green leaves spreading in a low-growing creeping manner makes it widely used as a green foreground carpet. Relatively easy to grow with medium or higher lighting, CO2 addition substantially improves growth rate and density. It grows slowly without CO2, so it can still be enjoyed in non-CO2 setups. As it spreads by rooting at stem nodes rather than runners, trimming back stems and replanting with tweezers is the most effective management approach. Solid substrate fertilizer is more effective than liquid fertilizer for nutrition. A popular foreground plant that combines naturally with hairgrass and foreground sand areas to create organic-looking layouts.
