Rotala rotundifolia
A popular stem plant that colors red to orange. Beautiful gradation with strong light and CO2.
Rotala rotundifolia is a stem plant in the family Lythraceae native to East Asia — India, China, and Southeast Asia — and is the most widely cultivated representative of its genus in the aquarium hobby, often sold under the synonym 'Rotala indica.' Slender stems bear small, rounded opposite leaves that range from green under low light to vivid red-orange under intense illumination with CO2 injection. Growth is vigorous, and dense background bushes are readily achieved by repeatedly trimming and replanting cut stems. Iron-rich liquid fertilizers noticeably deepen pigmentation. Affordable, readily available, and adaptable across a wide range of conditions, it is recommended equally to beginners seeking their first red plant and to experienced aquascapers building layered, colorful backgrounds.
